The Six Dollar Surprise (Season 1, Episode 5; Airdate: 10/4/66)
In this touching episode, David acts indifferent about his birthday, and says he doesn’t believe in them on general principle, but Julie deduces that he has never had a birthday party because he was raised in foster homes. David has limited her spending to just $6, and she must think of a way to make his birthday special.
Pete’s appearance had a major change from the pilot episode of Love on a Roof top (4 minutes 54 seconds) and this Season 1 Episode 5 (41 seconds). I tried to figure out what was different. I think he lost weight between these 2 episodes. I could not see his neck on the pilot episode. I can see why he wanted to lose weight. Judy Carne was so incredibly thin during these “Twiggy” years. To not look bloated next to her, you’d have to lose weight. I noticed George Lopez also lost weight from the time of his pilot epsiode, which also is so understandable when his wife on his show, Constance Marie, was so fit.
I’d love to know just how much weight Pete lost and how he did it. (Starvation? Exercise?)
I wonder if he had an exercise regime and what that might have been.
Pete’s appearance change occurred very quickly. It took him only 5 episodes to change. It took George Lopez 2 or 3 seasons to change his body type.
I also noticed Pete’s hair changed to being longer. His sideburns were longer, too, which helped give his face a longer, thinner look.
Pete’s change in appearance gave him a more relaxed, comfortable, at-ease, believable look.
Judy was definitely giving Pete a good look. 🙂 This was pretty impressive, considering Judy had been married to Burt Reynolds (1963 – 1965). 🙂 She had the best. 🙂
