Peter Deuel (Pete Duel) in ‘Generation’
Generation aka A Time for Caring; also aka A Time for Giving [UK] (U.S. Theatrical release: 12/16/69) … as Walter Owen
Advertising executive Jim Bolton is shocked when his daughter (played by Kim Darby) calls to share the news she has just gotten married. Insisting on visiting, he is staggered to find her about to give birth — at home in a New York loft with only Walter (played by Pete), her nonconformist husband, to preside over the delivery. At first, Jim (David Janssen) doubts Walter’s competence to oversee the precarious event without medical assistance, but finally relents when he calls in an obstetrician friend to observe and is assured that Walter seems well prepared. Pete and Kim Darby fell in love during the movie’s filming. This was also the film in which Peter Deuel changed his name to Pete Duel.
I thought today was a perfect time to revisit this charming comedy film which originated as a Broadway play. While Kim Darby received a Golden Globe nomination for her work, Peter, as described by a review in The New York Times, was a new face from television and came across as very likeable. The film and its message harkens back to perhaps a kinder, gentler time. And since I had not seen it in quite a while, I laughed in some new as well as old places. The film’s warmth emanates from the central characters, a young couple long on hope, short on funds but very much in love. And her dad is winningly played by David Janssen. Peter absolutely shines in this film which did not do well at the box office. His hopes for the film were not fully realized. But in the current climate of loud, CGI effect laden and overblown plots, it’s a wonderful time capsule to enjoy. And the power and potential Peter had can easily be seen. His smile not only lights the screen but everyone’s heart.
I love this movie seen it more than a dozen times. Pete plays his character so well, makes you wish you were Dory. Love Pete no matter what he plays. ❤️ 💕 💗 him still
